Actually, it can be you or your insurance company who can opt not to renew the policy if it expires. Your insurance company must provide you specific number of days notice and explain the grounds for non-renewal before it even drops your policy. This differs per state. If you deem that their reason is not clear or is not fair, you may call the insurance company’s consumer affairs division. If you still do not receive a clear explanation, coordinate with your state insurance department.
You should not think that the non-renewal is due to something you have done wrong as the company may have decided to drop that particular line of insurance or to write lesser policies where you live in. Meanwhile, if the non-renewal is because of something that you have done which may raise the risk of the insurance company such as driving drunk, your premium may increase and you may then opt not to renew your policy.
If your insurance company decides not to renew your policy, it does not imply that you will be charged a higher premium with a different insurance company.
